Located on the iconic ‘Gulch’ in the picturesque seaside town of Bicheno on Tasmania’s East Coast, the Lobster Shack offers so much more than just delicious seafood.
Our maritime museum aims to educate people about the history of the seafood industry in Tasmania and how Bicheno has developed from a thriving fishing port to what it is today. Marcus and Sara believe Tasmania’s sustainable, well-managed seafood industry deserves and indeed needs to be promoted to people from across the globe.
The viewing deck looks out to the Governor Island Marine Reserve, renowned for its spectacular underwater scenery. This area is recognised as one of the best and most temperate diving locations in Australia, with kelp-covered reefs and stunning sponge gardens.
There is no question the Lobster Shack Tasmania has enhanced the visitor experience to Bicheno and the next exciting phase of development will see the business transform into a truly unique and exclusive food and retail player in the East Coast tourism industry.

Bicheno is a family seaside holiday town with lots to see and do, good accommodation, excellent fishing and close to wildlife. Located north of the Freycinet Peninsula, Bicheno sits on Tasmania’s beautiful East Coast. Offshore, the Governor Island Marine Reserve has some of the best diving spots in Australia, with kelp-covered reefs and spectacular sponge gardens. This water wonderland can also be experienced by glass-bottomed boat.
There’s plenty to do on dry land as well, with popular penguin tours that let you get up close – really close – to fairy penguins at dusk and scenic walks to Rocking Rock, the Blowhole and along the sandbar to Diamond Island Nature Reserve. The local wildlife park also has lots of animals to meet up close, including kangaroos, Tasmanian devils and pelicans. More natural wonders can be found at the nearby Douglas-Apsley National Park and Freycinet National Park.
For foodies, there’s a bounty of fresh seafood in this fishing town, from crayfish, abalone to delicious Australian salmon. All types of accommodation are available in Bicheno and free campsites are dotted along the coast in parks and reserves.
Bicheno is a 2 hr 30-min drive (182 km) northeast of Hobart and a 1 hr 50-min drive (159 km) east of Launceston.
